Who is Rowlene?
Cape Town-born Rowlene Bosman is a 22 year old composer, singer & songwriter that is set to take the industry by storm. Signed to Nasty C’s record label, Tall Racks, Rowlene is working towards her debut album
which will show the budding artist’s vocal prowess, writing maturity as she fuses new age R&B and Pop.
Growing Up
Rowlene grew up in a close-knit family where her father was her biggest influence with sounds from the ‘80s and ’90s era playing throughout the house, all of which now form the foundation of her childhood musical references. Her first encounter with the concept of being an artist came in the form of small performances around family and friends, leading to recording demos in studio and now the pursuit of her soul’s calling… Music!
Her rise to Fame
Her guitar-playing skills, ethereal yet powerful vocals and songwriting abilities have introduced South Africa to a rising star with immense talent that will greatly impact the music ecosystem. Rowlene started her career early, dipping in and out of music unsure of whether this was the right path for her. It was only after creating and
experimenting in the studio that she began crafting her first mixtape, The Evolution of a Robot, in 2016. During this time, she worked on quite a number of demos and released music online, a process which taught her the intricacies of making and putting out music. Her debut single ‘Imposter’ came out while she was in her final year of high school. This release was the small seed planted back then that has now snowballed into the metamorphosis of the musician we see today
What to expect from Rowlene
Rowlene has mastered the art of live performance, effortlessly traversing the space between studio recordings and flawless live vocals. Coming in at a time where South Africa is celebrating the rise in exceptional female
musicians, she brings with her an air of a new age fusion of different genres extracted from different time periods – packaged in a manner that still shows her young, bubbly personality. She is currently working on her debut album, taking a different direction – choosing to lean into a wide range of sounds and styles in order to convey
themes of love, heartbreak and independence. Labelling Rowlene as a versatile artist would be an understatement given how she embodies and articulates a myriad of sonic styles; moving from ballads like her latest single ‘Curtain Call’, the beautiful delivery in a Hip Hop playing field on ‘SMA’, to up-tempo Pop and RnB synths that
characterize the current structure of the album. Predominantly driven by R&B, Rowlene’s music also fuses Pop, Dancehall and to a degree, touches on old classical textures.
