Hip Hop Pantsula

Pantsula completed his high schooling at St. Alban’s College in Pretoria. He was initially part of a group called Verbal Assassins, working closely with producer Tebogo Rameetse. In 1997, he and his school friends met with producer Chicco Twala who produced their debut album, Party. However, the band split soon after the release of Party. Pantsula had his next album, Introduction, produced by singer and producer Isaac Mthethwa and recorded in different South African ethnic tongues such as Setswana, isiZulu and Sesotho.

Pantsula frequently uses the phrase “Maf-town” in his music, which refers to his hometown, Mafikeng, of South Africa’s North West province.

In 2004 HHP released O Mang, an album that saw him reuniting with his old school friend, Tebogo Rameetse as the producer of a track entitled On My Own. The remix of this track, produced by “Beatmaker” earned him critical acclaim.

He was honoured in September 2007 in the inaugural Mafikeng Golden Stars Awards held at the Mmabana Convention Centre.

Pantsula released Acceptance Speech in December 2007 with its first single, Music & Lights, whose music video features Danny K and US R&B Star Amerie. In December 2009 Pantsula released his seventh studio album Dumela. That same year, he collaborated with another well-known South African rapper, Proverb, on a song entitled Breadwinners, once again featuring Tebogo Rameetse on production. He co-chairs a record label, Lekoko Entertainment.

Nandi Mngoma

Nandi Mngoma is a South African singer, actress and television presenter who rose to fame with the 2011 release of the single Tonight, which she wrote and had produced by DJ Franky.

She gained further fame with the release of her debut album Nandi in September 2012, which was followed up by her first music video, Goodtimes, in February 2013.

Born in the rural town of Maphumulo and raised in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, Nandi began performing at the age of four when she was cast as the lead ballerina in a ballet. She went on to do modelling, winning numerous titles including Miss Junior RSA.

Her introduction to a music career came when she won a talent search which gave her a steady gig as a performer at the Gateway Mall.

When she was 15, Nandi landed her first television presenting gig when she hosted the SABC2 pre-teen entertainment show Bling in 2004, in which she informed children about music, movies and other issues.

In high school she wanted to pursue a career in journalism but was dissuaded by a jaded journalist at a career exhibition who told her there was no money to be earned in the field. She chose instead to study law – first at UKZN and later at Varsity College.

In 2010 she entered the SABC1 presenter search for the music show LIVE and was one of the four finalists, eventually losing to Minnie Dlamini. In the same year she came second in the O-Access presenter search, which was won by Dineo Moeketsi.

Her star rose in 2011 with the release of her first single and she firmly established herself on the music scene with her debut album in 2012.

She joined ProVerb and Dineo Ranaka as a co-host of the Mzansi Magic magazine programme All Access Mzansi, in 2013.

Vusi Nova

Real name, Vusi Nongxo, this Eastern cape musician is as refreshing as he is endearing. He is the full package — the voice, the swag and the stage presence. Great combination if you are going to start off your new career by taking on giants like Etta James and Beyonce’.
I first heard (and saw) Vusi’s new single, which is a remake of Etta James’s famous blues song I’d Rather Be BLIND, on one of those random intermissions of SABC 3. I immediately went on Facebook and shared my appreciation.
The song was first recorded by James in 1967, released in 1968 and has since been re-recorded by countless singers. More recently and possibly famous is the 2008 Beyonce version on the movie Cardillac Records’ soundtrack.
That alone tells you how bold this new South African artist is. Looking at Vusi’s history you will understand why he needed to take a big risk to get noticed because thus far he was just hovering in the shadows.
No stranger to the music in industry, Nova has worked with the likes of Kelly Khumalo, Ringo and MXO.
In 2009 he released an album called Ndimfumene which barely made a blib in the market.
In 2010 he JOINED forces with the Kwela Tebza trio on their popular song “Ching Pow”. Subsequent to that there were stories of an album coming out.
The album never materialised or it did not do well enough for me to know about it.
In 2012, Kalawa Jazmee announced that they had signed Vusi, still going by his real surname Nongxo at the time, and he would be releasing a new song called Ntombenhle on which he features Zulu Boy. More talk of an album ensued but nothing came of it.
Few months later Vusi has broken out of the shadows and is ready to take his place in the spotlight. And dare I say it; South Africa DESERVES this! … pun very much intended. Competition breeds creativity afterall.

The ladies have been dominating the scene. Now you have 3 masssively talent vocalists, Donald Moatshe, Khaya Mthethwa and Vusi Nova, to give the ladies some competition.

Rebranded, with a new style and last name, Vusi Nova is now signed to Muthaland Entertainment and will be releasing his new album next week. If the I’d Rather Be BLIND SINGLE is anything to go by that Mzansi is in for a treat.

Stogie T

Tumi Molekane, who was born in Tanzania in 1981 when his parents were in exile, and who moved to Soweto, South Africa in 1992, is the poet and leader. The Volume is a power trio of Tiago C. Paulo on guitar, Dave Bergman on bass, and Paulo Chibanga on drums. They have two albums.

Their debut, At the Bassline, is a recording from a live session at a famous South African nightclub. Their sophomore effort, Tumi & the Volume, is a studio album that is similar to Meshell’s Cookie in that it mixes poetry and music, and also uses the voices and images of previous generations.

The incorporation of the views and voices of older generations that preceded hip-hop is a common and significant element in both Ndegeocello and Tumi.

Before 2010 L’loyd Cele would never have imagined himself to be one of the South Africa’s most popular artists. Long before Idols, Lloyd was always passionate about music. He was the worship director at his church and also a youth leader at Eagles Community Fellowship which equip young people to be effective in their communities. He is a self-taught musician and has learned to PLAY the guitar, keyboard and saxophone.

Lloyd’s musical background has been a huge advantage for him putting together his albums. Lloyd has written and composed around 90% of the songs on thealbums, titled ‘One and 2nd album, ‘No Limits’

Lloyd’s sound is about embracing South Africa’s diverse culture, racial groups, and musical influences and fusing them together in one album. The formula seems to have worked on his 1st album belting out hit after hit. After Idols came ‘Thanks To You’, this was followed by the much loved ‘Make It Easy’, nominated at Sama 2012 for song of the year and led to the dance inspired hit ‘My Air’, one of summer 2011 biggest local hit. The next big hit was the Zulu ballad ‘Thando’ featuring Loyiso Bala, which was nominated for a 2012 Sama in best collaboration. The album scooped up the award for best pop album of 2012.

“The past 3 years been an extremely creative period were I have had the chance to travel and record in the states developing music that I am very proud of” tells Lloyd.

Songs to look out for on Lloyd’s 2nd album, NO LIMITS are ‘Hero’, which carries a strong message. Other more light hearted tracks and love songs are ‘Feel The Love’ ‘Cinderella’ ‘Ngiyakhukumbula;, ‘Bambo Lwami’ and ‘She’s On Fire’.

2012 saw Lloyd receive another nod in the form of a Channel O awards nomination and in 2013 a Metro award nomination as well as 3 SAMA’s nominations for best Pop, best Record and best Collaboration.

“We are working hard to make a career in the music business and so far it’s been a blessing at every turn, MEETING amazing people and such supportive fans”

In addition to performing and recording Lloyd is currently lending his well liked and recognizable name and face to organizations such as Reach For A Dream and Domestos TOILET campaign. The Domestos campaign builds clean and new toilets in schools that have serious sanitation problems in Kwazulu Natal. Lloyd identifies with these issues due to his childhood experiences.

Outside of music there is an autobiography with a FREE acoustic CD released October 14th 2013 (A DREAM OF AN IDOL )-WITH DREAMS ACOUSTIC ALBUM as well as a new soul and a new dance house single. The soulful house track, THIN ICE produced by RJ Benjamin and YOUR FRIEND with DJ Tira and Fisherman.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Lloyd is also a radio PRESENTER with his own show on VumaFM called “The Lloyd Cele Show” every Sunday 3-7pm on Vuma fm, a new commercial radio station broadcasting in the Kwazulu-Natal region.

L’loyd encourages all people to reach for their their dreams and never give up. All things are truly possible!
